Enrique Peña Nieto: The Controversial Presidential Candidate

The latest darling of Mexico's political scene is the handsome Enrique Peña Nieto. Among all those running for president, Nieto is perhaps the most popular at the moment. The others participating in the polls are thus more than a little concerned about his presence.

Although the formal campaigning has yet to begin, Nieto seems to already be on the up and up with the voting population. One of his specialtiies is the art of public speaking, which obviously helps his cause. He possesses an intense magnetism that takes him an hour to walk through a crowd because women grab on to him and do not want to let him go.

Some of the critics are prone to saying that Nieto's repute is all due to a supposed deal he made with the most influential TV network in Mexico. It is alleged that the network was in cahoots with him to promote his achievements in the past. This, they allege, is the primary cause of Televisa's unceasing broadcasts of Nieto's accomplishments.

One possible cause for the allegations is the man's public relationship with a famous actress from the network. The actress is known for her prolific career in Mexican soaps and is inarguably among the most recognizable faces on Mexican TV. Nieto's first wife was not Rivera, though: it was a woman named Monica Pretelini, who was dead by the time he and Rivera were seeing each other.

The pair had a trio of offspring. Pretelini expired of a cardiac complication when Nieto was still the governor of the State of Mexico. This made Nieto one of the most popular single Mexicans in the country.

This popularity with the ladies makes up only a portion of his repute. He has also gained attention for having gone around his former area of authority to find out what the locals needed and for working hard to resolve the demands. Infrastructure was just one of the chief notes in his campaign.

When the promised public works were constructed, Nieto's campaign managers organized huge parties and gatherings for their (and Nieto's) promotion. Peña Nieto has successfully created an image of a man who gets things done, and one who works at keeping his promises to his people. Nonetheless, some claim that Nieto has spent more on organizing the social events promoting his achievements than on keeping the promises themselves.

His contenders and detractors also found more reasons to criticize him because of a recent controversy that happened when he presented his book “México: La Gran Esperanza” at the Guadalajara International Book Fair. It was discovered during the fair that Nieto was not capable of remembering the names of the people who had written some of his "top" books to read. The politician claimed that he had never been great at recalling book titles and writers, as he was the sort of reader who recalled contents better.

Unfortunately, quite a number of persons ridiculed him for it. When one of his daughters was asked about it, she delivered a rather emotional response that may not have been wise. Nieto made a handsome admission and apology on behalf of his daughter, but the ridicule remained.

It is Enrique Peña Nieto himself who alleges that those who criticize him often do so for words that are not taken in the proper context. All the same, Nieto is still the most popular candidate for the presidency. Surveys and polls are indicating that he may well be the next Mexican president.
